Our Vision at Sandhill Primary

Our Vision
At Sandhill, we believe that every child should leave our school fully prepared for the next stage of their learning journey, ready to be the very best version of themselves. We want our children to become confident communicators who develop a genuine love of language. Literature is at the heart of our curriculum, enabling pupils to explore the wider world through high-quality texts. We nurture inquisitive minds, encouraging children to ask questions, reflect on their own identity, and understand their place within Great Houghton and beyond.
Our vision is to create a school where openness, honesty, fairness, and empathy underpin everything we do. By combining these values with high-quality teaching, we ensure that every child receives a first-class education. Children are always at the heart of our work. We provide early help and support to remove barriers to learning, raise aspirations, and foster a love of learning. Alongside academic success, we prioritise the social, emotional, and mental health of our whole school community. This enables every child to reach their full potential and maximise their life chances.
Our CurriculumOur curriculum is designed around the needs of our pupils and aims to overcome barriers to achievement, including:
-External factors that may affect children’s lives and learning in school.
-The need to develop early fluency and accuracy in reading.
-Limited language acquisition, including subject-specific vocabulary.

We want our children to leave Sandhill with a strong understanding of the wider world, able to contribute positively to modern society. Our aim is for them to grow into resilient, confident, and independent thinkers who always strive to be their very best.

How We Achieve ThisWe are committed to:
-Providing expert support for children and their families to reduce the impact of home circumstances on learning.
-Prioritising reading and mathematics across our curriculum, enabling children to apply knowledge and skills in a meaningful, interconnected way.
-Delivering a rich, broad, and balanced curriculum where children can understand, remember, and confidently use key concepts and vocabulary.

Our Contract to Sandhill Stakeholders

At Sandhill, language is at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to ensuring that every child develops the skills, confidence, and love of learning needed to succeed in life.
We will:
  • Introduce new vocabulary every day to strengthen children’s spoken language and enrich their communication.
  • Nurture a love of reading through carefully chosen, high-quality core texts.
  • Provide opportunities to experience a wide range of genres, authors, and cultural perspectives.
  • Share our passion for reading to inspire curiosity and lifelong learning.
  • Teach phonics systematically to build confident, fluent, and accurate readers.
  • Demonstrate how reading opens the door to knowledge, opportunity, and understanding.
  • Identify children who need additional support with language and provide tailored help so they can communicate effectively with their peers, whatever their starting point.
  • Regularly review and reflect on children’s progress in communication and interaction, removing barriers to learning whenever they arise.
  • Continually refine our approach by drawing on the latest research and best practice, ensuring that our children gain the strongest possible foundation for understanding their role in the world.
