Phonics and Early Reading at Sandhill Primary

The Phonics Leader is Mrs J Saddington
Latest Update regarding RWI at Sandhill
On Friday 5th November we had Liz Bellis, a Literacy Specialist, visit our school. She spent the morning observing some of our reading teachers delivering their phonics sessions to our FS2 and KS1 children. After walking around our school and visiting the different phonics sessions Liz was so full of praise for all of the staff and children. When we met after viewing the phonics sessions, Liz said "Mrs Saddington, you've got some really, really strong members of staff here" and she is completely right.
Liz was really impressed with our consistent approach to teaching phonics and staff's confidence. Staff are reflective on their sessions, meaning sessions stay high quality. Our children were engaged and have made amazing progress since Liz's last visit.

OUR VISION
Sandhill Primary has been on a rapid improvement journey with Phonics and the way in which we teach reading across our school. In September 2019 we relaunched Read Write Inc.  RWI is a systematic synthetic phonics program which has been proven to get children off to a flying start with their reading and writing. We engaged with our local English Hub - Jerry Clay Academy - and every term, we work alongside English Hub Literacy Specialists and a RWI consultant to challenge and develop our teaching of phonics and early reading. Miss Cooper is our Reading Leader. She works alongside staff, team teaches and delivers training and coaching to them each week to ensure we deliver RWI in a rigorous and consistent manner and have a team of highly skilled reading teachers.

We believe that fluent reading is developed through early language acquisition, effective teaching of phonics and developing a love of reading. We believe reading opens the door to learning. A child who reads a lot will become a good reader. A good reader will be able to read more challenging material. A child who reads challenging material is a child who will learn. The more a child learns, the more he or she will want to find out.

Using RWI, the children learn to read effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into comprehending what they read. It also allows them to spell effortlessly so that they can put all their energy into composing what they write.

When using RWI to read the children will:
  • learn that sounds are represented by written letters
  • learn 44 sounds and the corresponding letter/letter groups using simple picture prompts
  • learn how to blend sounds and read words using Fred Talk
  • learn that some tricky words with graphemes can’t be read using Fred Talk – these are Red Words (you can’t Fred a Red)
  • read fun and lively stories featuring words they have learned to sound out and show that they comprehend the stories by answering questions and discussing the text

When using RWI to write the children will:
  • learn to write the letters/letter groups which represent 44 sounds.
  • learn to spell words by saying the sounds in Fred Talk
  • write simple sentences

At the end of Year 1, most pupils undertake a Phonics Screening Check. More details of this can be found on the DfE Website.
